The Trump government sanctioned two senior Turkish officials for the long-term detention of Brunson, Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül and Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu, and called them "leaders of Turkish government organizations responsible for implementing the gross rights abuses humans in Turkey, "according to the Treasury Department.
Shortly after, the EE. UU They also imposed steel and aluminum tariffs on Turkey, citing national security. Economic sanctions generated problems in the markets, which led the Turkish currency to sink.

President Donald Trump speaks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan when they arrive at the NATO summit in Brussels on July 11, 2018.
"The launch of Brunson is a big business for the relationship between the United States and Turkey: it clears the air in [bilateral] Lazos, restores ties between two powerful presidents, ventures against Turkey in the United States Congress and allows Turkey and the United States to address [bilateral] problems without the emotional dimension of the pastor's detention, "according to Soner Cagaptay, director of the Turkish Program at the Near East Policy Institute in Washington.
Among the remaining thorny issues are the purchase by Turkey of a Russian missile system, the support of the United States to Kurdish groups in Syria and the radical repression of the political opposition by Erdogan.
