An alleged plot to level accusations of sexual misconduct against special lawyer Robert Mueller was referred to federal investigators, a spokesman for the special lawyer said Tuesday.

"When we learned last week of allegations that women were offered money to make false claims about the Special Adviser, we immediately referred the matter to the FBI for investigation," said Peter Carr, a spokesman for the special adviser, a declaration.

The woman claims that the calls she received were from a man she said represented the well-known conspiracy salesman Jack Burkman, according to a report in the Atlantic


"Any accusation that I paid someone to come forward is completely false," Burkman told ABC News in an emailed statement.


In recent days, Burkman has made claims on social networks, without evidence, of harmful information soon in Mueller.
