Jamie Lee Curtis returns as Laurie Strode on "Halloween". She speaks to the USA today UU About the (in) famous mask worn by the killer Michael Myers.
Robert Hanashiro, USA TODAY

The pumpkin. The almost impossible type to kill with the mask of William Shatner. The big kitchen knife. The creepy melody. All those iconic things mean "Hallowe'en" He is back and in a great way.

That old man, stalking figure of pure evil, Michael Myers, Returns in the new film of the director David Gordon Green (in the cinemas Friday), a sequel that retakes the narrative 40 years after the original film of 1978, John Carpenter. Michael escapes from custody and arrives in Haddonfield, Illinois, for another confrontation with Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), the former nanny who is now a very armed warrior grandmother.

But wait, you're thinking: have not there been a lot of sequels in those four decades? Yes, and fortunately the new movie eliminates everything, from the strangest mythology (a Man in Black, really?) To the extensive family tree of Michael (who practically wants to erase). Wow, a "Halloween" movie does not even have Michael!

It's not that everything was bad. In honor of the last installment, we are classifying the complete "Halloween" franchise, although it is safe to say that there is only one true classic in the group.

11. 'Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers' (1989)

Poor Donald Pleasence. While Michael cringed for longer, Dr. Sam Loomis went through a lot during his "Halloween" career, but this was the lowest point where Michael escaped from a mine pit to pursue his niece Jamie (Danielle Harris). Worst part? A mysterious Man in Black (hat, spurs and all) that inexplicably arrives at the end to get Michael out of jail.

10. 'Halloween: Resurrection' (2002)

Do not kill national treasure Jamie Lee Curtis in a movie. You just do not do it. But that's where Laurie, in a moment of weakness, is stabbed by Michael and thrown to his doom from the roof of an asylum. Fifteen minutes in the movie, nothing less!

9. 'H2: Halloween II' (2009)

The second half of Rob Zombie's ambitious two-part restart tripped with blood overload and Michael Myers (Tyler Mane) looking more like an astute professional wrestler than "The Way" of evil. One positive aspect: the appearance of Deborah Myers (Sheri Moon Zombie) as a ghost mom (with a white horse!) Who resembles both Michael and Laurie, also known as Angel Myers (Scout Taylor-Compton).

8. 'Halloween III: Season of the Witch' (1982)

This weird little hiccup in the series is the result of a brief flirtation with "Halloween" as a horror anthology instead of a slasher festival. So Michael has been archived and in his place villain is a new company that plans to use a mystical stone of Stonehenge to put on Halloween masks for children and massacre millions. At least the bad guys had a spooky and catchy jingle.

7. 'Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers' (1995)

This is the entrance of guilty pleasure. It is one of Donald Pleasence's final papers: he died seven months before it came to light. It is Paul Rudd's second film role, like the nutty Tommy Doyle (one of the children saved by Laurie in the 1978 movie). There is a slight "Footloose" angle, with a Haddonfield ban on Halloween. And to make the franchise really crazy, he presents the "Curse of Thorn" and a cult to explain Michael's bloody anti-family bent.

6. 'Halloween' (2007)

Something important had to be said: "Let's redo John Carpenter!" But Rob Zombie's brutal modern interpretation added a bit of background story about little Michael's murderous tendencies and the basis of the additional story before a happy climax. (Also: Malcolm McDowell is a tremendous Dr. Loomis, it's worth seeing for him alone).

5. 'Halloween: H2O' (1998)

In addition to their new 40th anniversary, Laurie Lee Curtis and Laurie Strode also returned to celebrate the 20th. After faking her death to avoid Michael, her former enemy finds Laurie working in a private school, and they have a confrontation in which she cuts Myers head (Fun fact: Totally it was not him).

4. 'Halloween II' (1981)

Jamie Lee Curtis is actually underutilized in the first sequel, which takes up where the original stayed with the night of Laurie's hell. Dr. Loomis is concerned about the cops looking for Myers and the residents of Haddonfield begin to go crazy when they realize that a murderer is on the loose, while Michael is busy tracking Laurie to a local hospital (which will be a frequent "Halloween" in the future). Oh, yes, and Laurie is apparently Michael's sister. Surprise!

3. 'Halloween 4: The return of Michael Myers' (1988)

The entire angle of the bloodline gets blurred in these films, but the fourth installment gives Michael something good by giving a young niece Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris). Naturally, she's the target of the villain's latest uproar, but there's still a bit of Michael ... and not just DNA, in Jamie, which gives the series a touch of freshness, as well as a surprising ending.

2. 'Halloween' (2018)

The new follow-up is a not very frightening, but often amusing, retreat to the simpler slashers of yesteryear, while at the same time a modern vision of tragedy and trauma. Like 40 years ago, Haddonfield is not fully prepared for Michael, although Laurie does, and Jamie Lee Curtis is the best of it as a middle-aged woman who just is not taking it anymore.

1. 'Halloween' (1978)

By far the best, there is no doubt. When John Carpenter opened the film from the point of view of Michael, 6 years old, he stabbed his sister and then met him 15 years later, following Laurie (and unleashing hell in the suburbs), gave him One step fear. the door of an audience for the first time: How to escape from an unstoppable maniac in your house? And now it's as timeless as it was four decades ago.
