Ryan Braun slid down the plate in his house and raised his arms with joy.
A big plus, a bullpen bullet and a boisterous crowd have the Milwaukee Brewers all ready for Game 7.
Jesus Aguilar caused the Milwaukee lineup with three RBIs on a pair of two-out hits, and the Brewers beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-2 on Friday night to equal the NL Championship Series in three matches each.
"I do not think about me, the most important thing, at the end of the day, is to win games," said Aguilar, who had driven only two runs in the playoffs. "Tomorrow can be someone else, tonight, it was me."
Game 7 is Saturday night in front of the same frenetic crowd that booed Manny Machado noisily after he became entangled with Aguilar while the series was in Los Angeles. Dodgers rookie Walker Buehler faces traveling salesman Jhoulys Chacin, with well-rested ace Josh Hader looming in the bullpen for Milwaukee after a day of surprise.
It is the first Game 7 for the Brewers since they lost to St. Louis in 1982 in their only appearance in the World Series. The Dodgers lost Game 7 of the World Series last year against Houston.
"I have to get them tomorrow, we have one more game," said Machado. "They played well baseball today. Then, we have to play a better tomorrow. "
David Freese started Game 6 with a home run that calmed Miller Park, but only for a moment.
Backed by noisy fans waving yellow towels that say "ONE TOUGH CREW", Milwaukee recovered from consecutive losses at Dodger Stadium with the same formula he used to win the NL Central for a season.
Some timely punches from Aguilar and company produced an early lead, and Corey Knebel and Jeremy Jeffress led the way in another closing performance for Milwaukee's tough bullpen.
"Anybody, anywhere, at any time," Knebel said. "We are ready to go."
Los Angeles was looking for its second consecutive National League pennant and a time to prepare for the mighty Red Sox in the World Series. But losing pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu was scored for four runs in the first inning, two in a double by Aguilar who sent Braun home.
After Wade Miley pitched into the fifth inning in his second consecutive start, he faced a single hitter in Game 5: Knebel, Jeffress and Corbin Burnes closed it with relief without hitting. Knebel got the victory and Burnes pulled the Dodgers in order in the ninth inning, triggering a wild celebration for the crowd of 43,619.
Manager Craig Counsell considered bringing Hader, especially in the eighth, but Aguilar scored on an uncontrolled pitch in the seventh and single in Lorenzo Cain in the eighth. The extra room helped persuade Counsell to give Hader another day of rest. The reliever armed with rockets has not launched since Tuesday in Game 4.
"The best case is for us," Counsell said.
Freese led both runs for the Dodgers. The rest of the Los Angeles lineup got only three miserable singles. Harassed by boos throughout the night, Machado went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts.
"You know what, I'm focused on the game," said Machado. "Try to go field by field, drive races, do what we have to do in the field, we do not execute today."
Freese, 35, was a surprise choice for Dave Roberts' first hitter, and made his manager look pretty good when he started the game with a boost to the right center for his ninth postseason home run.
Freese also connected in the first inning of Game 6 of the previous NLCS in Milwaukee, helping the Cardinals win the pennant in 2011. It was his fourth time in first place in his 10 years in the majors.
But the Brewers put together a quick response that set the tone for the rest of the night. With the runners in first and second in the lower half of the first, Aguilar lined up a double from the opposite field in the corner on the right.
Mike Moustakas followed with another double RBI and scored on the single from Erik Kratz to put the 4-1. The Brewers achieved just three runs in the two previous games in Los Angeles.
"It was huge to be able to answer in the first inning after the homer," said Moustakas. "One would have been great, two would have been incredible, putting four here gives us a lot of confidence."
Christian Yelich and Braun combined for another race with consecutive doubles in the second, and then it became a matter of strategy for Roberts and Counsell with Game 7 on the deck.
Roberts used starter Rich Hill in eighth place after Kenta Maeda struggled, staying away from key reliever Pedro Baez and closer Kenley Jansen. Counsell stayed with Knebel for five outs, which gave him his first professional appearance with the bases loaded in the fifth (strikeout) and Burnes worked two perfect innings.
"There is the idea of trying to go to your pen in the first or second inning, but there is a significant cost to a potential Game 7," Roberts said. "So I felt we needed to get some more tickets from Hyun-Jin to keep our highest leverage rates available for a potential Game 7."
