A regional microorganism suitable for the bioremediation of soils



After analyzing hundreds of samples taken in the region, researchers from the National University of Villa María (UNVM) and Conicet (Argentina) managed to characterize a microorganism with the ability to degrade atrazine in polluted surface waters to a non-toxic compound. Subsequently, they worked to increase their biodegradation efficiency and be able to reuse it in other polluted waters. The emergence arose from a line of research that monitors the presence of the herbicide in rivers, canals, streams and lagoons of the Río Tercero basin.



Laboratory tests converted the isolated microorganism, called Arthrobacter sp. AAC22, in a potential candidate for bioremediation of contaminated environments, which could be used with all chlorinated herbicides of the s-triazine family. Therefore, they tested as a biotechnological strategy the encapsulation of the bacteria in a polymer matrix making pearls, which allowed the complete degradation of the herbicide and protected the degrading bacteria from the adverse environmental conditions. Thus, it could become an alternative to be used in future systems in search of remedying contaminated environments.



Research professor Romina Bachetti commented on the origins of the project: "In my doctoral thesis, we managed to isolate the bacteria from a stream in the region; Now we know what genes it has, which are responsible for degrading atrazine and we managed to immobilize it in a polymer matrix on a laboratory scale, with the projection of working with pilot scale bioreactors. "

On the other hand, the researcher noted that, to enter the affected space, it is evaluated "introduce the bacteria or extract the contaminated and transfer it to another system where the bacteria are and return it to its place once it is remediated". At present, there are developed systems for groundwater that incorporate biofilters in the income of the tanks of the water treatment plants, where the water passes through a tube that contains the bacteria and goes biodegrading, but "they are tests more related to hydrocarbons".



In the first investigations carried out in the Villa María region, the presence of atrazine in surface water was detected. This is one of the most used herbicides in regional agriculture, which in low proportions would not be toxic for humans but does produce alterations in the environment and mainly affects photosynthetic microorganisms, which can also damage bacteria.



Therefore, the importance of the study aims to generate bioremediation strategies tending to intervene and solve environmental problems. In addition, according to Bachetti, the impact of this mechanism is less than if chemical processes are used, because Arthrobacter is a native microorganism that does not "affect the rest of the organisms" that are in that ecosystem. "It is a friendly strategy that tends to minimize the impact on the environment," he said.
