The Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) (Spain) initiates the coordination from Galicia of a new European project on traceability and the correct labeling of fishery products, with which it continues the LABELFISH project. This is SEATRACES, led, like the previous one, by the Food Biochemistry Group of the Marine Research Institute.

LABELFISH, which was developed from 2012 to 2015, had the task of knowing the degree of compliance with European regulations on labeling and consumer perception in this regard. A standard procedure was proposed for the first time in Europe for the identification and authentication of marine species in fishery products, based on the use of a universal genetic marker. On the other hand, it was observed that there are important differences in the correct labeling of fishery products in line with the commercial value, type of product and country.

"Based on these results, a new project has been designed with the aim of advancing the development of techniques that provide control laboratories with tools to determine more effectively and quickly the degree of compliance with European labeling regulations. . In this sense, the consortium will develop new methods to define the geographical origin or the presence of added water, as well as fast methods that allow the in situ control of fishing species. Another objective is the creation of a European platform from which you can access and another one of labeling and authenticity of fishing products ", advances Carmen González Sotelo, CSIC researcher at the Marine Research Institute and project coordinator.

"We also intend to carry out consumer opinion analysis to determine in the six participating countries (Spain, Portugal, Ireland, United Kingdom, France and Germany) the level of interest for quality labeling, such as local and sustainable fishing or of geographical origin, and analyze through case studies the benefits or disadvantages that this type of labeling can mean for producers ", adds the researcher.

The general objective of SEATRACES is to demonstrate to the different actors of the value chain and to the consumers that the correct labeling and traceability of marine products are essential to protect and value the fishing and aquaculture of the Atlantic area, making them see that the Fraud in labeling and illegal fishing represent a risk to the economy of the so-called Atlantic zone of the European Union and providing them with tools that allow them to adopt a responsible attitude towards the production, marketing and purchase of seafood.

The project also seeks to demonstrate, through case studies in four European regions (Galicia, the Basque Country, southern Ireland and central Portugal), how the technological innovation in traceability and labeling has an impact on the increase in revenues from the commercialization of products. marine To this end, special attention will be paid to the case of bivalves and artisanal fisheries, whose trading companies are mainly SMEs, with limited innovation possibilities and which face a growing market outside the European Union.

The SEATRACES project consortium has the participation of LABELFISH project partners, to which new partners join and join the producers. For Spain, in addition to the CSIC as leader, the Consello Regulador do Mexillón de Galicia, the AZTI Foundation, the Xunta de Galicia, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Spanish Agency for Consumption, Food Safety and Nutrition. On behalf of Portugal, the Portuguese Institute of Atmospheric and Exporrated Sea, Commerce and Industry of Sea Products participates. For Ireland, Indigo Rock Marine Research Station and Sea-Fisheries Protection Authority and Fastnet Mussels. For the United Kingdom, The University of Salford, The University Court of the University of Aberdeen, Marine Stewardship Council and Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. For France, Muséum National D'Histoire Naturelle and Service Commun des Laboratoires. The Max Rubner-Institut participates in Germany. In addition, the international organization dependent on the European Commission Joint Research Center participates.

"We have a transnational and interdisciplinary consortium, with representatives that cover the entire value chain of marine products: from producers and administration to consumers, through research groups, in addition, all the countries of the Atlantic area are present", concludes Carmen González Sotelo.
