A dusty view of the Al Qassim region
A line of storm clouds was moving through the Al Qassim region in central Saudi Arabia, when an astronaut on the International Space Station took this oblique photograph. These storm clouds they went south and they were probably related to heavy rains and deadly flood in Yemen from 13 to 14 April 2016.
The thick dust hides part of the Arabian desert from our point of view, a frequent impediment to taking pictures of the region. Some of the dark features are rocky outcrops, which can rise up to 300 meters (1000 feet) above the surrounding desert floor. The gradual fading of blue to black over the clouds marks the transition of Earth's atmosphere to space.
Dark, vegetated patches that stand out from the orange desert sand are irrigation by pivot agricultural fields in the eastern highlands of the Ad Dahna desert. Farmers in Saudi Arabia produce grains, fruits and vegetables in the middle of the desert. Agriculture has remained here. In the last decades through the pumping of water from underground aquifers. This water is considered a non-renewable resource because the lack of rain in the region is not enough to recharge the aquifers to meet the demand. There are no rivers that flow permanently they exist in Saudi Arabia.
Astronaut photograph ISS047-E-57176 was acquired on April 13, 2016 with a Nikon D4 digital camera with a 400-millimeter lens and is provided by the Earth Observation Facility of the ISS crew and the Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit, Space Center Johnson. The image was taken by a member of the Expedition 47 crew. The image has been trimmed and enhanced to improve contrast, and the lens artifacts have been removed. the International space station program supports the laboratory as part of the National Laboratory of the ISS to help astronauts take photographs of the Earth that will be of great value to scientists and the public, and to make those images freely available on the Internet.
