NEW YORK - The Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden was packed with fans eager to see the crew of the USS Discovery talk about season 2 of the new "Star Trek" series at New York Comic Con.
Only moments after panel moderator Rebecca Romijn (who will play Number One) presented the cast on stage, executive producer Alex Kurtzman showed the 5,500 febrile fans a new trailer, and only the second, after the trailer that debuted at San Diego Comic Con back in July.
Similar to that trailer, this new one presents a great amount of images of the first episodes of the second season, but also incorporates clips of episodes until the middle point.
If you remember, at the end of Season 1, the USS Discovery was last seen on a date with the USS Enterprise, currently under the command of Captain Christopher Pike. Apparently, Spock (who, incidentally, has taken a leave of absence from the Enterprise so we can not see it, yet) is connected to a new major cosmic threat, with strange anomalies appearing throughout the Federation space, which it requires an urgency. The company's response and now the discovery, which Pike takes command of.
The trailer starts with the USS Discovery, not the Enterprise, in an asteroid field, and we even see some crew members on a spacewalk. Dramatically cuts Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) leading to Saru (Doug Jones), who looks severely injured when sparks fly around him and red warning indicators are activated in the corridors.
As we saw in the first trailer and was confirmed on the NYCC panel by Anson Mount, Pike's first mission with the USS Discovery team (still in his USS Enterprise gold uniform) is in a dangerous area of space with rocky asteroids. To find the USS Hiawatha.
It assures the Discovery bridge crew that no one is left behind and that they deform.
Cut to Burnham once again while trying to figure out what the seven symbols mean and how they are related to the disappearance of the scientific officer Spock (Ethan Peck). Spock had a vision, they tell us, and called it the "red angel."
At first, fans speculated that this could refer to the icon of the Romulan Empire, fueling the debate over whether this was related in any way to the reunification between the Vulcans and the Romulans in the future, as we saw in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation "(Season 5, episodes 7 and 8).
Now we see Burnham in distress and wounded in an environment suit, surrounded by the burning remains of ... something. Is it the USS Hiawatha? But she has a moment of clarity as an "unequivocal feeling that everything would be fine" she washes over it.
We quickly see what looks like a holographic projection of a Klingon Class of k't'inga battleship. And then we see what, at first glance, appears before a changing transformer in Emperor Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) of the Terran Empire in the Mirror Universe. However, what makes the most sense, since she has now been recruited into the clandestine arm of Starfleet, Section 31, is that she wore a holographic disguise.
A barrage of action follows and we see Romijn for the first time as Number One. Stamets (Anthony Rapp) offers something alarming to Tilly (Mary Wiseman) while Saru watches, and, using some kind of big, old weapon, Stamets seems to rip something off to Tilly. Could I be connected to that easy-to-forget scene in the season 1 episode "What's past Is Is Prologue" (season 1, episode 13) where one of the spores seems to be embedded in Tilly's back?
The constructions in crescendo, the phasers are drawn, the people are in panic, the explosions ... er, explode. Pike says: "This looks bad." And then, we have our first adequate vision of the bearded spock (Peck), which looks like a cross between Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) from "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" and "Motion Picture" Spock (Leonard Nimoy) when he's in Vulcan failing the Kolinahr, a ritual to purge himself of all human emotion
