A 2,500 year old car was found, complete with rider and horses
.A car was discovered that dates back to the Iron Age in Yorkshire, making it the second time in two years that such a discovery has been made.
The discovery was made in a small town by the name of Pocklington in Yorkshire at a construction site where houses were being built. Now the work in the houses has stopped while a complete excavation is carried out from October. What is interesting about the finding is that not only has a car been discovered, but also the horse. skeletons that pulled the car and the human remains of the driver.
The CEO of Persimmon Homes in Yorkshire confirmed that a significant archaeological discovery had been made. That discovery is a chariot pulled by horses from the Iron Age. He went on to say that archaeologists are carrying out the excavations that will date the find and detail it. During the Iron Age, it was common practice to bury cars. What the archaeologists did not expect to find were the remains of the horse rider and the horses that were dragging him. The discovery dates back to 500 BC and at that time was the only finding of this type in 200 years. To date, only 26 cars have been excavated in the United Kingdom.
Archaeologists said it was unusual for horses to be buried along with the car and human remains.
Paula Ware, general director of MAP Archaeological Practice Ltd, said:
"The car was located in the last square cart to be excavated and on the periphery of the cemetery, the discoveries are intended to broaden our understanding of the Arras (Middle Iron Age) culture and the dating of artifacts for safe contexts is exceptional"
In the Iron Age, it was seen that the car was a kind of status symbol of those who have money. The inclusion of horses in the burial of human remains of such a person is unknown. It's something that has bewildered the researchers.
The excavation revealed numerous artifacts
Archaeologists found pots, shields, swords, spears and brooches among the many finds. All of these gave researchers a good insight into the lives of people who lived more than 2,500 years ago. Yorkshire has been a good place to find the remains of the Arras culture, which have been preserved very well. Around 150 skeletons were found in the region during 2016, and researchers believed that the skeletons were from the Arras culture. The skeletons along with their possessions were found in the Yorkshire Wolds, a small commercial town.
