6 children died from adenovirus outbreak in New Jersey

At least six "medically fragile" children died from an adenovirus outbreak in a nursing and rehabilitation center in New Jersey, officials said Tuesday.

The outbreak occurred in recent days at the Wanaque Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Haskell, according to a statement from the New Jersey Department of Health.

The health department confirmed that they are investigating a total of 18 adenovirus cases, including the six pediatric deaths.

"The center has been instructed not to admit new patients until the outbreak ends and they are in full compliance," the health department statement said.

Adenoviruses are part of a group of viruses that can infect the membranes or tissue of the respiratory tract, the eyes, the intestines, the urinary tract and the nervous system, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Symptoms usually include sore throat, pneumonia, diarrhea and conjunctivitis.

"Unfortunately, the particular adenovirus strain [#7] "This outbreak is affecting medically fragile children with severely compromised immune systems," reads the statement from the New Jersey Department of Health. "The strain has been particularly associated with the disease in communal living conditions and can be serious."

An inspection team from the state health department responded to the facilities on Sunday and another agency team returned to the center on Tuesday.

"The team discovered minor handwashing deficiencies on Sunday and the Department of Health continues to work closely with the facility on infection control issues," the statement said.

State officials were notified for the first time of respiratory diseases at the center on October 9, officials said.

"This is an investigation of ongoing outbreaks," the department said in its statement.
