The cost, complexity and time required by 3D printing by metallic materials have prevented this kind of technology from expanding in the industry.

The situation seems to be beginning to change. The company Desktop Metal, co-founded by A. John Hart of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, United States, and other experts from that institution, is about to start supplying preliminary versions of its new 3D printer, called " Production System ", which can produce up to 100,000 pieces of metal with a cost and speed that make it competitive compared to traditional manufacturing methods.

The company's first product, called "Studio System", improved the safety and speed of 3D printing of prototypes and small batches of metal parts.

The Studio System made it practical to generate prototypes in the office and carry out productions of small quantities. But for Desktop Metal to compete in the global manufacturing market, the company needed to reinvent the printing process even more.

Production System uses innovative techniques and, according to the company, is the fastest 3D metal printer in the world, 400 percent more than the fastest of all others of its kind, and 100 times more than current laser printers.

However, it remains unclear to what extent 3D printing will alter conventional metal processing in the near future. Keep in mind that traditional manufacturing processes have several advantages when it comes to creating relatively simple pieces in large quantities.
