3 rebels, civilians die in Kashmir in the middle of battle, clashes
SRINAGAR, India - Three suspected rebels were killed in a gun battle with government forces in disputed Kashmir on Sunday, sparking violent protests against India.
The fighting broke out after troops cordoned off a village in the southern Kulgam area at a point where the rebels were hiding there, the Indian army said. The exchange lasted several hours in which three militants were killed and two soldiers were wounded, the army said.
Residents said soldiers attacked a house of civilians with explosives while fighting the rebels, a common accusation by Kashmiris who deeply resent the presence of the Indian army.
While the fighting was unfolding, the anti-India protesters tried to reach the scene of the confrontation. They threw stones at government forces in the hope of helping the trapped rebels escape. Government forces fired pellets and tear gas at protesters, leaving at least 35 wounded.
When police and counter-insurgency soldiers left the site in a hurry after the fighting ended, hundreds of civilians gathered at the site. There was an explosion when people tried to extinguish the fire in the devastated house, said residents, who killed at least one civilian and wounded five others who were hospitalized in critical condition.
S.P. Pani, a senior police officer, said civilians gathered at the site despite repeated requests to stay away while soldiers were still clearing the area. "Someone in the crowd played with an unexploded explosive substance that resulted in the tragic incident," he said.
India and Pakistan administer part of Kashmir, but both claim it in full.
Most Kashmiris support rebel demands that the territory be united under the government of Pakistan or as an independent country, while at the same time participating in civil street protests against Indian control. In recent years, mainly young Kashmiris have shown open solidarity with the rebels and have tried to protect them by involving troops in street clashes during military operations.
The rebels have been fighting Indian control since 1989. India accuses Pakistan of arming and training the rebels, a charge that Pakistan denies.
Nearly 70,000 people were killed in the uprising and the ensuing Indian military repression.
