On World Mental Health Day, the hosts of "The View" had an open conversation about their own experiences and talked about the role of social networks in the growing mental health crisis.

Meghan McCain spoke about her father's death in August, on her third day at the show.

"One of the things I wanted to say when I came back was that we did not talk about pain and death enough," McCain said. "I'm in an intense grieving process right now, I'm still struggling with how to talk about that."

"Make no mistake, I'm happy to be here on this show," he continued. "But, the mornings and nights are still very difficult for me."

In the midst of his coping process, McCain said he realized that the grieving process should be discussed more openly.

"We should be able to speak in our culture about death, cancer, pain, without stigma," he said.

Whoopi Goldberg talked about how she continues to cry in her own life, too.

"I am also still grieving for my brother and my mother," Goldberg said. His brother, Clyde Johnson, died in 2015 and his mother, Emma Johnson, died in 2010.

"You're still thinking, 'Oh, a day will come when I'll be what I once was,'" he said. "We're all going through this, and that's why we have to become mutual managers."

Yvette Nicole Brown, who joined the table as a guest host, pointed to the role of social media in the mental health crisis among the younger generations.

"When I was a kid, if something happened at school, I would stay at school for 12 hours until you got back to school, you could leave it there," Brown said. "Now, it follows you ... it becomes a feeling where pain and despair, that's your whole life."

Goldberg compared it to a time when cancer was stigmatized and open conversations about the disease were discouraged.

"We can not afford to do that," he said. "It's not just young people, it's people my age, it's people your age ... they think they're not good enough or they're inadequate, or they do not have what it takes ... we have to take care of one the other."

McCain drew attention to the suicide epidemic among veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and more.

"We should be talking about this in a broad sense," he said. "We are not yet doing enough with V.A., we are not doing enough to support veterans when they integrate back into society."
