Researchers believe that a rock was inserted into the mouth of a 10-year-old child to prevent the deceased child from rising from the grave as a vampire and spreading malaria.

In northern Italy, where the discovery was made, they call it the "Vampire of Lugnano".
"I've never seen anything like it, it's extremely strange and weird," said Arizona University archaeologist David Soren, who has overseen archaeological excavations at the site since 1987.
The evidence obtained from the bones suggests that the child was infected with malaria at the time of his death, The independent informed

It is believed that ritual burial is a way to prevent the child from returning to spread the disease.
The remains are the latest unusual discovery that emerged from the Children's Cemetery, a site containing dozens of children's bodies and evidence of witchcraft, including toad bones, crow claws and bronze cauldrons, according to the newspaper. Previously it was believed that the cemetery contained babies, small children and unborn fetuses.

"Given the age of this child and his unique deposition, with the stone placed inside his mouth, it represents, at this time, an anomaly within an already abnormal cemetery," said David Pickel, a PhD student at Stanford, who is the director of excavations.
He added: "This only highlights the uniqueness of the baby cemetery, or now, rather, of children in Lugnano."

Although the remains of the 10-year-old girl have not yet undergone a DNA test, the child had a dental abscess (a side effect of malaria) that suggests that he or she may also have been a victim of the disease, said the bioarchaeologist at the University of Arizona Jordan Wilson.
The boy was one of the five new burials discovered in the cemetery during the summer.
