& # 039; Racists believe he is a racist: the Florida governor's debate heats up

The gubernatorial candidates of Florida, Democrat Andrew Gillum and Republican Ron DeSantis, met for their second and final debate on Wednesday night before the mid-term elections.

Taking place in Davie, Florida, the Mayor of Tallahassee and the former United States congressman exchanged harsh words on topics of national and local interest, such as today's news. explosive devices A series of public figures and the CNN cable news organization were sent to the controversial racial commentaries made during the race, to an investigation into free "Hamilton" tickets and medical care.

Rhetoric of the pipe pump

Opening the debate, both candidates were asked if they felt that the current political climate could have inspired a series of explosive devices that would be sent to political figures such as Hillary Clinton, former President Barack Obama, several other prominent Democrats and New York. Building of the city that houses CNN.

DeSantis did not say whether he thought that the political discourse could be related to the explosive devices that are sent, but he did talk about one of the last times the violence occurred due to political disagreements.

"I was in baseball practice in Congress when an armed man tried to shoot my teammates, shot Steve Scalise because he did not like Republicans," DeSantis said, referring to the June 2017 attack in which an armed man , who was said to be a leftist activist, opened fire on a group of Republican lawmakers who practiced for a charity baseball game. "I condemn that, I condemn what happened today, obviously we need to know the facts before drawing conclusions, but I think it's important that we try to unify."

Gillum, on the other hand, said there was a connection between explosive devices and the political climate.

"We saw not only throughout the country, but in our own state, elected officials of the Democrats who were attacked," Gillum said. "We are really seeing a collapse of our political discourse."

Race relations

A subject now recorded in the dynamics of the Florida Governor's debate, both candidates had much to say when it came to controversies about racism.

DeSantis was asked about his affiliations with political donors and figures who at various points made questionable comments about racism, including a donor who once called President Obama the word N and his own use of the phrase "simulates this" when referring to Gillum your African-American opponent.

DeSantis was very reluctant to the subject, at a certain point that he said he can not know everything that his supporters or people with whom he is affiliated could have said at one time or another. Instead, he said he would represent all Floridians, regardless of race, but would not participate in political correctness.

Gillum responded that "I am not calling DeSantis a racist, I simply say that racists believe he is racist."

DeSantis followed up and said: "I'm not going to sit here and take this nonsense like Andrew Gillum, who always plays with the victim, who goes out and attacks, who is allied with the groups that attack our men and women in the application of the law".

"Hamilton" the controversial entries

An important theme in the debate was the revelations that Andrew Gillum accepted tickets to the hit Broadway musical, "Hamilton," from an undercover FBI agent investigating public corruption in the state capital in 2016.

Gillum said that while it is not the subject of an FBI investigation, it has "zero tolerance for corruption." However, he admitted that he should have asked more questions about how the tickets were obtained before turning around to say that there were now more pertinent things to think about.

"I'm running for governor, in the state of Florida we have a lot of problems, in fact we have 99 problems and 'Hamilton' is not one of them," Gillum said.

However, the issue remains a thorn in Gillum's campaign when documents published on Tuesday raised new questions about whether Gillum knew the tickets came from the agent, known as "Mike Miller," who posed as a developer.

The documents, which had been cited by the Florida Ethics Commission, were published by the lawyer representing Gillum's lobbyist friend, Adam Corey.

Shortly after winning his elementary school in late August, the Gillum campaign issued a statement saying that in 2016 his brother Marcus Gillum gave a ticket to the mayor to see "Hamilton", and that Marcus had received the "Hamilton" ticket in a "Ticket exchange" with Adam Corey for a concert ticket. "

However, the newly published documents showed that while Gillum was on a trip to New York City, Corey sent him a text message saying that "Mike Miller" had "Hamilton" tickets for the "crew". Gillum replied: "Good news about Hamilton."

Health battle

A topic that is generally considered one of the most important for Floridians, health care proposals became a big problem in the debate.

While Gillum proposes a "Medicare for all" platform, he said that providing a single payer plan in conjunction with other states is personal for him.

"We deserve to expand Medicaid and offer access to medical care for more than 800,000 of the most medically needy people in our state," said Gillum. "This means something to me, I remember having to wait for the free dental clinic to go through my neighborhood to get my teeth cleaned."

DeSantis, on the other hand, said that Gillum's proposal will cost Floridians the health care plans they worked on.

"The bottom line is that we have to make it more affordable for people, we also focus on protecting people's existing coverage," said DeSantis. "Andrew supports a single-payer plan that will force people to stop medicare, people abandon their employer plans, leave them in a single-payer government plan, that's wrong, they should be able to keep coverage who has won. "
