Ambitious and generous television series are routine in the era of high-spending transmission platforms.

But the last entry, Amazon"The Romanoffs" tests viewers with its classic TV format: it is an anthology series composed of eight self-contained episodes, in contrast to the narrations of all-season programs that include "American Crime Story."

The element that connects the stories of "The Romanoffs" is the ancestral bond that its main characters affirm to the Russian imperial family assassinated at the beginning of the 20th century. Friday's debut in the Amazon Prime series combines two episodes, "The Violet Hour" and "The Royal We".

Corey Stoll, who stars in the second episode with Kerry Bishe, Janet Montgomery and Noah Wyle, says the series reflects its historical roots.

"What makes 'The Romanoffs' an exciting and fertile terrain from which to tell our stories are the contradictions" in them, "Stoll said." There is an incredible grace, glamor and power that the family had. But there was a huge amount of degradation and scandal. "

The early episodes do not reach the heights of the real tragedy of Romanoff (also known as Romanov), but there is greed, racist cruelty, betrayal and, perhaps, love scattered in what are essentially individual movies.

While Early TV was the home of anthology series with independent episodes, including the "Playhouse 90" of 1956-61, the audience is now accustomed to continuing the stories. With "The Romanoffs", they will find in their place new characters, changing comic and dramatic tones and a true scenario travel notebook: the series was shot in Paris, London, Mexico City, New York and Hong Kong, among other places.

"The Romanoffs" could also be a measure of how he sees his creator, Matthew Weiner, after facing an accusation of sexual misconduct in the workplace "Mad Men" and claims that he could be a tough boss in the drama of the 2007-15.

(Weiner, who declined to be interviewed, has refuted the accusation of making a lascivious comment to a writer.) He has described himself as "angry" at times during the production of the AMC program.

Several of the cast members of "The Romanoffs," who joined the project before the indictment was made public last year, said working with Weiner alone was rewarding.

"My experience with Matt was excellent," said Amanda Peet, who plays a woman who faces her past in "Expectation," which airs on October 26. "I understand that is not the case for everyone, but for me it's great."

Jon Tenney, who stars opposite Peet, also called his experience "great." As for the allegations, Tenney said, "that's what Matt should talk about."

Annet Mahendru, who appears with Kathryn Hahn and Jay R. Ferguson on the November 16 episode, "End of the Line," marveled at the attention to detail of perfectionist Weiner.

"We chose my nail polish together, usually on TV shows there is no time to decide things like that," said Mahendru, who also remembered him jumping to remove the fluff from the floor before a scene.

Weiner, who directed the series and wrote or co-wrote most of the episodes, "really loves what he does, and that's why we get to enjoy it and do what we love as completely as possible," he said.

While the scripts were attracted to the scripts and Weiner's "Mad Men" record (16 Emmy awards, including the four best drama series trophies), some had other reasons to jump on board.

"My wife is actually of Roman descent," said Stoll, with his mother a duchess. "But I did not know the whole history of the Romanoffs until they selected me, and I realized it's a good excuse to investigate."

For Aaron Eckhart, who stars in "The Violet Hour" with Marthe Keller and Ines Melab, the opportunity to work in Paris in the spring was a definite advantage for the American actor who once lived there.

He called it "wonderful" to be able to practice his French and "have Paris as a backdrop ... We were filming on the Champs-Elysées, we're on Avenue Georges V, we were all over the city," he said.
