LONDON (Reuters) - The creator of "Mad Men", Matthew Weiner, is back with a new television series, but although it is far from the advertising world of the 1960s, he says the themes are very similar.

"The Romanoffs" presents eight contemporary dramatic stories about people who believe they are descendants of the Russian royal family and a handful of "Mad Men" actors, including Christina Hendricks and John Slattery.

Launched on Amazon on October 12, it is Weiner's first television adventure since he won nine Emmy awards for "Mad Men," whose story of a restless and troubled American ad executive, Don Draper, ended in 2015.

Weiner, who created, wrote and directed "The Romanoffs," says the series discusses issues of identity, and nature versus nutrition.

"Who am I? Do I have a right to more because I was born a certain way? Am I a survivor because I was born a certain way?" Weiner said about the show at its premiere in London on Tuesday.

"But even though my work looks like that, I really wanted to make a show that was entertaining," he said.

"The Romanoffs" takes place in seven countries, and each self-contained episode has a different cast, which includes Diane Lane, Corey Stoll, Paul Reiser, Isabelle Huppert and Marthe Keller.

Weiner said he was drawn to the story because of what Romanoff's name says about current notions of celebrity and fame. The Russian imperial dynasty ruled for 300 years until the Russian revolution of 1917, when 18 of them were killed and more than 40 remaining members fled abroad.

"It's a time when we wonder why we used to be great," he said. "Part of my fascination with the Romanoffs was that (royalty) still has a lot of prestige."

The first reviews of "The Romanoffs", which will be developed weekly on Amazon, have been mixed. Variety called it "ambitious," the Rolling Stones said the episodes had "moments of brilliance in the midst of an uncontrolled expansion," and IndieWire called it "shallow and self-indulgent."
