Alyssa Shepherd, 24, the driver of the SUV that crashed into the children, was arrested and charged with three counts of reckless homicide and a misdemeanor for failing to consider a stop sign and cause injuries, officials said. ABC News.


Children crossed State Route 25 to get to their yellow school bus when they were run over at around 7:15 a.m. in front of the park of mobile homes. Indiana State Police said the bus's emergency lights were flashing and that their stop signal arm was off when they were hit.


The investigation of the crash continues and police did not disclose details about why Shepherd paid no attention to the bus stop signal arm.

Xzavier, Mason and Alivia died on the scene. His father ran out of his house and identified them after police came to investigate, authorities said.


"My nephews, my niece were brilliant, they were great children, they had a future," Ingle told ABC News.

Ingle said that the parents living in the mobile home park had previously asked the Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation to change the bus route so that the children did not have to cross State Route 25 to catch the bus. "This has been a problem before, parents have made comments to the school about this change," Ingle said. "There is a lot of room for the school bus to stop and pick up these children, but this school was warned that this is a problem."


Contacted by ABC News on Wednesday morning, the school district made no immediate comment.


Shepherd stayed at the scene of the accident and was cooperating with the investigators, the sergeant. Tony Slocum, the public information officer for the Indiana State Police, told ABC News. Shepherd was released on $ 15,000 bail Tuesday night.
