LONDON: Banksy, the anonymous British street artist famous for his flashy political parodies, has spent a million-pound joke on a buyer of one of his own works.
The framed piece "Girl With Balloon", a piece painted with spray template 2006, was auctioned at Sotheby's in central London. Moments after it was sold to an anonymous buyer for £ 1.04 million ($ 1.4 million), the canvas passed through a shredder that appeared to be hidden within the frame, emerging below in thin strips.
"It looks like we just received Banksy-ed," said Alex Branczik, Sotheby's senior director.
A post on Banksy's Instagram account said: "Going, go, gone ...", along with a photo of the article in front of a group of dismayed spectators.
In a statement on its website, the auction house said: "The unexpected incident became the instant story of the art world and certainly marks the first time in the history of the auction that a work of art is automatically destroyed after have been attacked. "
Banksy, a pseudonym, keeps his identity wrapped in a mystery. He began painting with spray in his native Bristol, in southwestern England, in the 1990s, and has since gained international recognition for his politically charged street art, which often tends to appear without warning, all over the world .
Several of his works of art were removed from the buildings and sold at auction, while his 2010 documentary, "Exit Through the Gift Shop," was nominated for an Academy Award.
"Girl With Balloon," which depicts a boy in black who approaches a red heart-shaped balloon, is one of Banksy's most recognizable works, but was not the first to earn more than $ 1 million.
In 2008, his "Keep It Spotless," a painting by Damien Hirst defaced by the elusive artist, sold for $ 1.87 million at a Sotheby's charity event in New York.
