Keira Knightley fought against pirates, dazzled on the football field and played the lure of the Queen on the screen. It was a sudden rise to fame for the now 33-year-old star of the new movie "Colette." She spoke with ABC News about how she handled the fact of being pushed into the spotlight.

"The rise to fame I had when I was very young was quite extreme," Knightley said in a recent appearance on "Popcorn with Peter Travers." "But I've learned, and I've discovered what I like and I do not like." Knightley said he has developed a preference for period films.

"I find it fascinating, I really find it fascinating," he said. "As a genre, I love it. But it is the research that I really love. It's as if I could bring back the dead. I have the opportunity to walk in a person's shoes and bring them back to life. I find it quite extraordinary. "

Knightley plays the role of French novelist Sidione-Gabrielle Colette, who agrees to be a ghostwriter for her husband played by Dominic West in the early twentieth century.

"She was just this extraordinary being," Knightle told Peter Travers. "He took credit for his first four novels. But they were this kind of extraordinary couple, this kind of celebrities, big stars in their own right. And it is a journey in which she finds her voice and rests on her own feet. I found it incredibly empowering. "

Travers noted that the film was based on a time when it was believed that people would not buy books written by women.

"People said that about movies featuring women until a few years ago," Knightley said. "People say that about films directed by women. I think that's what I loved about the script. We continue having the same conversations. We certainly have not resolved it yet. But it's not good that we have the conversations. I just felt that it was extraordinary to have a piece set a hundred years ago and that feels so modern and up-to-date. And that I, as someone today, can see and leave, yes, I can relate to that. "
