A mysterious murder

On August 2, 2016, Vetrano, 30, went running without problems in Howard Beach, Queens. Her father, Phil Vetrano, usually went with her, but at that time she had an injury, so that day, she ran alone.

Vetrano was severely beaten, lying face down on 8-foot rods, with his front tooth out of the paw, with his trousers down and his socks wet, said Robert Boyce, who was the New York police detective chief at the time. .

Boyce called the brutal murder one of the most notable cases of his career.

"My thoughts were ... she was dragged through [a puddle of] water and then creeps out of the way to the tall reeds, "said Boyce, who has since retired and become a contributor to ABC News.

His phone was found lying in the reeds about 15 to 20 feet from his body, Boyce said.

The murder made headlines across the country as she afflicted family begged the public For help to solve the case.

"She lived longer in her short 30 years than most people in 10 lives," Phil Vetrano told ABC News last year about his daughter.

"He had a wish list at age 26 and he really did and he did most of those things on the list," he said, citing trips to Europe, a camel ride through the Great Pyramids and a trip to the Grand Canyon.

"She went everywhere ... nothing stopped her," he said. "She was extraordinary."

A young man arrested

Despite the recovered DNA, months went by without arrest.

Then, in February 2017, after the police received more than 250 referrals and took 600 DNA samples, a suspect was identified, after what authorities say was a lieutenant following a lead.

Lewis, then 20, was taken into custody, a week after police contacted him for the first time about the murder of Karina Vetrano.

Lewis lived with his mother in East New York, Brooklyn, which borders on Howard Beach, where Karina Vetrano was murdered.

New York police lieutenant John Russo first saw Lewis at the Brooklyn-Queens border three months before Vetrano's death, police sources told ABC News at the time of the arrest.

Russo thought he looked suspicious and called him, but Lewis left before a patrol car could respond, police sources said. The next day, a person who called 911 mentioned Lewis by name and said he looked like he was entering a Howard Beach property with a crowbar, police sources said.

I never wanted to hurt her, it just happened.

While working on the Vetrano case, Russo suggested taking a look at Lewis. Police located it and said it gave a voluntary DNA sample, which matches the recovered DNA from where Vetrano was found, police said.

Lewis had no prior arrests so his DNA was not in CODIS, Boyce said.

Lewis, who did not seem to know Karina Vetrano, allegedly told detectives he "just lost it" and strangled Vetrano after seeing her on the jogging path, according to a statement that prosecutors read aloud during his appearance.

Vetrano "did nothing," Lewis allegedly told the police. "I was angry at that moment, I hit her to let my emotions out, I never really wanted to hurt her, it just happened."

"

"

He pleaded not guilty because he believes and knows that he did not commit this crime.

According to Lewis' statement to detectives read by prosecutors at his arraignment, Lewis fought with Vetrano for about five minutes. He allegedly said he hit her repeatedly, leaving her unconscious, prosecutors said.

The case goes to trial

Lewis, now 22, is awaiting trial at the Rikers Island jail in New York City.

"Mr. Lewis is very optimistic," Reverend Kevin McCall of the National Action Network, a spokesman for the Lewis family, told ABC News. "He pleaded not guilty because he believes and knows that he did not commit this crime."

The Legal Aid Society, representing Lewis, said in a statement: "We have serious doubts about the collection of evidence and tactics employed by the New York Police Department that led to the arrest of our client, and we trust that the jury will examine Critically evidence and find that the government is not going to prove your case. "

Chris Banks, the spokesman for Lewis' family, told ABC News that they believe Lewis's confession was coerced.

Lewis' mother, Vita, said her son was religious and nonviolent.

"I love my son," he told reporters last year. "My son is friendly, God fearing and will not hurt anyone."

McCall added that Lewis was quiet and a "bright young man". He vowed to "fight to the end" for him.

Meanwhile, Phil Vetrano, who told ABC News last year. who will attend the court every day, said his family "will never let him pass".

"We are there to defend my daughter, who can not fend for herself," he said.

When she was alive, Phil Vetrano said that her daughter lived her life to the fullest.

"She always had fun," he said. "It should be an example for others to live their lives, live each day as if it were their last day," he said. "Because you do not know what will bring you in 10 minutes, and that's how Karina lived her life."
