October Snow in Siberia
While many areas of the northern hemisphere are still dressed in the reds, yellows and oranges of autumn, Siberia has just been covered in one color: white.
the Radiometer visible for infrared images (VIIRS) in Suomi NPP acquired these images from southern Siberia. The image on the left was taken on October 14, 2018, while the image on the right shows the snow-covered region on October 29.
While the Siberian winter reaches its maximum strength around December, cold temperatures and snow begin to settle around October. The cold is due in large part to high pressure. atmospheric circulation system called High Siberian, which is usually present from October to April and is centered around Lake Baikal. The climate system is accompanied by a mass of cold, dry air created by the intense cooling of the surface layers on the continent as the seasons change and the days shorten. The high pressure too. steers Storms can mix the atmosphere and bring warmer air to the region, which helps keep the air dry and cold in the region.
Some forecasters consider the October snowfall in Siberia as a proxy for measure the severity of winters in North America, known as the Snow Theory of Siberia. If there is a lot of snow in Siberia in October, the Siberian high will become stronger. This can lead to a series of events that weaken the polar vortex and cause it to break or collapse. The pieces of the polar vortex can travel to North America and bring more cold air from the Arctic.
So far, the snowfall in Siberia has been light this year. As of October 15, the Eurasia snowfall in 2018 was Below average and close to a ten-year low.
