Murray recovers, meets No. 7 OU past Texas Tech, 51-46
Kyler Murray kept throwing him and executing him after two quick interceptions that put the No. 7 Oklahoma in a two-touchdown hole.
Texas Tech's Alan Bowman did not have a chance to end the duel in the second half due to a recurrence of the partially collapsed lung that left the first-year quarterback five weeks ago.
Murray rebounded from those early selections by throwing 360 yards and three touchdowns and running for 100 yards and another touchdown to rally the Sooners to a 51-46 victory over the Red Raiders on Saturday night.
Trey Sermon scored career highs with 206 rushing yards and three touchdowns, including a 30-yard rusher, while the Sooners (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) remained in search of a return to the Soccer Playoff University with its 19th consecutive game. Win in a real road game and 14 consecutive win in November.
Oklahoma, which was seventh in the first playoff rankings released last week, gave the Red Raiders (5-4, 3-3) their eighth consecutive loss to a Top 10 team that dates back to 2012.
"Well, what was I thinking?" Murray said, repeating part of the question after spending 20 of 35 passes without another rotation after the two fast.
"After the first, just do not do it again, and then I did it again, and then it was just that, I mean, you have to know me, I'm great, quiet, and that's the only way to be after you do something A) Yes ".
The Red Raiders led 31-28 at halftime, but Bowman did not return and ended up in a Lubbock hospital, just as he did on Sept. 29, when he suffered a lung injury for the first time in a loss to West Virginia.
Bowman, who said the school would be held overnight for observation, returned two weeks ago to Kansas. Coach Kliff Kingsbury said Bowman injured his lung again in a race near the goal line at the end of the first half.
The absence of the Big 12 pass leader changed the flow of a game that looked a lot like the 65-59 touchdown festival the Sooners won at Lubbock two years ago.
Texas Tech punished three times in a row without getting a first try after Jett Duffey replaced Bowman again, just as he did against the Mountaineers.
But Duffey managed to get the Red Raiders moving again, and managed a pair of two on his 4-yard touchdown pass to Zach Austin in the fourth round in the middle of the fourth quarter. But Robert Barnes intercepted the 2-point conversion pass and returned it 98 yards for two points and a 44-40 OU advantage.
"I should have found a way to make him feel more comfortable at the beginning of the second half than I was," Kingsbury said. "Once he got into the rhythm and he was competing and making his deal, he played very well."
Murray's two interceptions were made by Vaughnte Dorsey, in his first pitch of the game and again in OU's second possession.
Bowman threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Vasher after the Red Raiders got the ball in Oklahoma 3 after Dorsey's return of 17 yards on the first interception.
After a 31-yard return in the second selection of Dorsey, Duffey appeared as a rhythm replacement for Bowman and threw a screen that Ta'Zhawn Henry took 14 yards for a 14-0 lead.
Murray recovered to lead the Sooners to 687 yards in total, in what is estimated to be their only chance to match Mayfield's career to the four-team playoff last season, as the junior is expected to pursue the pro. baseball after a year as a head of OU.
"Sometimes, a kid can be a little shy when you have a beginning like that," said Lincoln Riley, who stayed out of his alma mater for the first time since replacing Bob Stoops. "And he was not, he kept throwing, he ran the ball well."
Lee Morris caught two of Murray's touchdowns, the 46-yard second that put the Sooners ahead 35-31 in the third quarter. Morris had 101 receiving yards. Texas Tech's Antoine Wesley caught 12 passes for 199 yards.
THE TAKEAWAY
Oklahoma: The Sooners gave up more than 300 yards for the first time in three games since former Texas Tech assistant Ruffin McNeill replaced retired Mike Stoops as defensive coordinator. It is difficult to measure the progress of the unit due to Bowman's injury. The Red Raiders finished with 473 total yards.
Texas Tech: The Red Raiders will wonder what could have been if Bowman could have come back in the second half. He was 21 of 26 for 227 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Still, Duffey showed a persistence similar to the first time Bowman was injured. He threw for two touchdowns and ran for one that gave Texas Tech a shot in a short kick with 1:05 remaining. Failure.
IMPLICATIONS OF THE SURVEY
OU could raise a spot due to the loss by money laundering of the No. 4 LSU to the highest ranked Alabama. The rest of the teams ahead of the Sooners won impressively and the two teams behind them had victories closer to the expected.
MARCH OF 30 YARDS
Receiver CeeDee Lamb stopped Oklahoma's momentum when he was called for a personal foul and unsportsmanlike conduct after catching a pass for the first attempt at Texas Tech 7. The 30 yards in penalties led to a punt when the Sooners were at edge of the second Direct Touchdown Unit and its first double-digit lead in the third quarter.
UNTIL NEXT TIME
Oklahoma: Bedlam is at home against Oklahoma State next Saturday.
Texas Tech: another great game at home against the No. 15 Texas next Saturday.
