NASA has lost a second spacecraft this week, ending a fruitful mission in the asteroid belt.

With little fuel for some time, the Dawn spacecraft stopped communicating this week with the flight controllers. His prolonged silence prompted NASA to declare him dead on Thursday, two days after delivering praise to the Kepler Space Telescope hunting the planet. The director of the mission and chief engineer Marc Rayman insisted that he was not sad. Ceres is the largest object in the asteroid belt, followed by Vesta. The "amazing" images compiled by Dawn are shedding light on the history and evolution of our solar system, said the head of the scientific mission of NASA, Thomas Zurbuchen.

Dawn should remain in orbit around Ceres for decades, according to NASA.

"For me, that is an appropriate end to an extraordinary extraterrestrial expedition," said Rayman.
