A study highlights the benefits of losing weight with Mediterranean diet and exercise

The international magazine 'Diabetes Care' has recently published the results of a study that demonstrates the health benefits experienced by those who lose weight by adopting a lifestyle based on the Mediterranean diet combined with exercise.

The article offers the results of an essay developed during twelve months, in which a group of researchers from the GIIGAS Group participated, led by Professor Vicente Martín Sánchez, from the Area of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and from the Institute of Biomedicine (IBIOMED ), both from the University of León (ULE), thanks to a grant from the SEMERGEN Foundation (more than 350,000 euros in five years) and an FIS project (150,000 euros in three years).

The study reveals that intensive lifestyle intervention for 12 months with PREDIMED-Plus (MED Diet Prevención Diet) was effective in decreasing adiposity and improving cardiovascular risk factors in overweight / obese adults with metabolic syndrome, as well as in individuals with diabetes or at risk of diabetes.

These results are of great importance because, although it may seem strange, the long-term effect of intentional weight loss in cardiovascular events remains unknown. Hence the impact of this research, which has evaluated the effectiveness in primary cardiovascular prevention of an intensive lifestyle intervention to lose weight, carried out with PREDIMED-Plus.

The trial was conducted with a group of 626 adults aged 55 to 75 years, overweight and obese with metabolic syndrome, who were randomized into two groups. One was the control (GC), and the other intervention (GI) that participated in an intensive change in lifestyle to lose weight, based on a Mediterranean diet with energy restriction, promotion of physical activity and behavioral support.

The results obtained were in the expected direction. The so-called 'primary' were changes in weight and the 'secondary' were recorded in cardiovascular risk markers, with significant improvements in the members of the intervention group compared to those of control.

After 12 months, the participants lost an average of 3.2 kilos, compared to 0.7 kilos in the control group (weight loss greater than or equal to 5 percent occurred in 33.7 percent of the participants, compared to only 11.9 of the CG). In addition, cardiovascular risk factors, including waist circumference, fasting glucose, triglycerides, and HDL cholesterol, improved significantly.

The reductions in insulin resistance, HbA 1c and the circulating levels of leptin, interleukin-18 and MCP-1 were greater in the participants of the intervention group than in those of the control group. In addition, IG participants with prediabetes or diabetes significantly improved glycemic control and insulin sensitivity, along with triglycerides and HDL cholesterol levels. (Source: ULE / DICYT)
