They patent a chemical compound that fights Chagas disease

Researchers from the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca (UABJO), in collaboration with their colleagues from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), patented a chemical compound that will make it possible to fight Chagas disease.

The doctor in chemical sciences and responsible for the development of the compounds in the research, Juan Luis Bautista Martinez, emphasizes that for 18 years he has worked with similar formulas until reaching the latter that, after conducting in vitro tests with the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi , which causes Chagas' disease, showed its potential as an alternative treatment for this disease transmitted by a triatomine insect, commonly known as "besucona bug".

In an interview, it indicates that the experiments on living beings are pending, as well as their viability, so that it can not yet be considered a medicine.

The results obtained so far, he says, have been the result of a collaboration between researchers and students from the faculties of Medicine and Chemical Sciences of the Oaxacan university itself, among them Dr. Eduardo Pérez Campos and Adriana Moreno Rodríguez, as well as the faculties . The SNI level I has worked in the last 18 years in the development of formulas, until reaching this one that showed its effectiveness in the combat of the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, which causes Chagas disease.

The Level I member of the National System of Researchers (SNI) states that the reason that led them to carry out studies to reduce this condition is related to their growth throughout the world, but mainly in areas with high rates of marginalization.

Recognizes that although at this time the investigation is stopped in the absence of inputs, continue the characterization of the chemical compound and are waiting for steps to perform the corresponding tests.

At present, Chagas disease is treatable in the initial stage for a period of 90 days, time that passes from the contagion to the concealment of symptoms; While in the chronic stage, which can last up to 20 years, the parasite enters the cell and causes heart growth and organs such as the esophagus, colon, among others.

Between 130 and 150 infected people are detected annually in the entire state of Oaxaca. And although the disease was focused on the coastal region of the state, in the last 10 years, due to population mobility and the change in environmental temperatures, it has even spread to the region of the Central Valleys, where located geographically the capital.

The head of Other Diseases Transmitted by Vector of the Health Services of Oaxaca (SSO), Ana Livia Posada Jiménez, states that it is not the picket of the triatomine that transmits the disease, but the feces of the insect contaminated with the parasite.

The SSO expert warns that population mobility and the change in environmental temperatures have caused Chagas disease to spread throughout the state of Oaxaca. The bug, he explains, also injects a substance that numbs the region where it hits, so that the person does not notice the bite until the animal finishes feeding and retires, that is when it causes itching; and when scratching, it introduces the parasites through the abrasions that are produced by this action.

However, it emphasizes that not all the bugs defecate at the moment of biting, nor are all carriers of the parasite. As soon as symptoms such as a chagoma (wheal) up to 10 centimeters in diameter, occasional fever, inflammation of an eyelid without pain or infection data (Romaña sign), you should go to the medical unit.

"Chagas disease is a public health problem in the state because the entire state has the presence of the vector that is the triatomine, as well as positive reagents from people with the parasite," he warns.

He adds that the treatment provided by the institution is free in health centers and acts positively in 100 percent of the cases in the first stage of the disease (acute), while in the chronic stage its effectiveness diminishes, although it has the ability to reduce the possibility of patients presenting complications.

Other forms of contagion, he says, are from mother to son during pregnancy, organ transplantation, consumption of poorly cooked wild animals or blood transfusion.

Posada Jimenez states that for a case to be corroborated as Chagas disease, the health services carry out two laboratory tests and rectify with the National Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (INDRE) to be completely sure that the person is infected

The full-time research professor at UABJO, Juan Luis Bautista Martínez, hopes to continue with the studies of the chemical compound to obtain a result that will allow treating people infected with the parasite and avoid deaths. (Source: AGENCIA INFORMATIVA CONACYT / DICYT)
