The NATO chief says nuclear accumulation is unlikely despite US threats





NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says he does not expect an accumulation of nuclear weapons in Europe, despite threats from the United States to withdraw from a Cold War missile agreement over accusations of Russia he is violating

The United States says Russia's 9M729 missile system contravenes the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, and NATO allies agree that this is probably the case.

The pact between Moscow and Washington prohibits a whole class of weapons: all ballistic missiles and ground cruisers with a range of between 500 and 5,500 kilometers (310-3,410 miles)

Stoltenberg said on Wednesday that "I do not foresee that the allies will deploy more nuclear weapons in Europe in response to the new Russian missile."

He said that NATO allies are now evaluating "the implications of the new Russian missile for our security."
