The fastest camera in the world: 10 billion images per second

The world's fastest camera has been created, capable of capturing 10 billion images (frames or "frames") per second. This new camera makes it possible to freeze the time to see in detail in slow motion ultra-fast phenomena, including even the advance of the very light.

The achievement is the work of the international team of Jinyang Liang, of the Canadian National Institute of Scientific Research (INRS), and Lihong Wang, of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in the US city of Pasadena.

In recent years, the intersection of innovations in nonlinear optics and visualization has opened the door to new and very efficient methods of microscopic analysis of dynamic phenomena in biology and physics. But to take advantage of the full potential of these methods, there needs to be a way to record images in real time with a very short time resolution, in a single exposure.

Using current visualization techniques, measurements taken with ultrashort laser pulses should be repeated many times, which is acceptable for some types of inert samples, but impossible for others more fragile.

With the new camera, called T-CUP, it is possible to obtain high-quality images while recording 10 trillion frames per second.

Having beaten the world record speed of capturing images in real time, the T-CUP can be essential for a new generation of microscopes with applications in the biomedical field, the science of materials and others. This camera represents a fundamental change, making it possible to analyze the interactions between light and matter with unparalleled temporal resolution.
