(The Associated Press)George Gascon, the San Francisco district attorney who did not win a murder conviction in the trial of a homeless illegal immigrant accused of shooting Kate Steinle in 2015, announced on Tuesday that he will not seek re-election.
Gascon, who clashed with candidate Donald Trump over the case, and in 2017 referred to President Trump as a tweet "crazy"who ignited the media frenzy - cited the need to care for her 90-year-old mother in Southern California as her reason for not running again after her second term expires next year, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
"At this moment, I simply can not be the son I want to be and seek a third term," Gascon said in a statement. "My career means a lot to me. But success in the world with a family in chaos is not a choice he is willing to make. "
Gascon was harshly criticized by Trump and the conservatives after the fatal death of Steinle, a 32-year-old San Francisco resident who was fatally shot while walking along the coast of the city with her father and a friend.
Shortly after his death, it was revealed that his alleged killer, José Inés García Zárate, 45, a Mexican, had been released from a San Francisco jail under the city's "sanctuary city" law instead of being handed over to immigration authorities.
He had been deported five times before Steinle's death.
Gascón accused Trump of taking advantage of the case to promote an anti-immigrant agenda, accusing Trump of instigating a media circus around the García Zárate trial.
Prosecutors argued that García Zárate intentionally killed Steinle on pier 14. Defense lawyers said the shots were accidental and that the bullet bounced on the ground and hit Steinle.
A jury eventually acquitted García Zarate of murder and homicide charges, but he was convicted on a weapons charge. A jury called the shooting an "accident freak".
After the verdict, Trump tweeted that it was a "complete farce of justice" and a "disgrace."
García Zarate faces a second round of charges of federal authorities, including being a criminal in possession of a firearm and being a foreigner in possession of a firearm.
Gascon was named district attorney in 2011, after his predecessor, the current US Senator Kamala Harris, Democrat for California. - He is allowed to act as attorney general of the state.
He previously served as San Francisco Police Chief from 2009-11.
During his tenure, Gascón faced criticism for defending progressive reforms. Approved Proposition 47, a 2014 measure designed to relieve overcrowding in prisons in the state and reduce certain crimes to minor offenses.
He also faced groups in favor of the police for being the only law enforcement officer in the state who supported a failed bill that would have created a stricter standard for when police officers can use lethal force.
His decision not to prosecute officers in high-profile police killings also provoked contempt in some communities of protesters of color and police brutality, the report said.
Gascón cited a dramatic reduction in violent crime during his time as police chief and district attorney.
"It's hard to get away, especially when we're experiencing so much success and progress," Gascon said. "I am flattered by the solid and diverse support for my campaign and it will be difficult to get away from that. But, in this moment of my life, it is the only option with which I am sure I can live. "
