Ari Fleischer: legal immigration enriches the United States. Illegal immigration does not

I am a Republican in favor of the immigration of George W. Bush, son of an immigrant and someone who welcomes legal immigrants in our country. But the caravan of approximately 7,000 asylum seekers marching through Mexico to the United States represents everything that is wrong with our immigration system.

The people who march here would be better served if they asked to come to the United States legally. If they try to come illegally, they should not be allowed to enter.

One of the reasons why the United States is attractive to immigrants is that we are a nation of laws. But that does not mean that the first thing immigrants can do is break the law to get here. They can not

Nor can all immigrants claim refugee or asylum status. Most of those who come from Mexico and Central America seek to escape poverty in their countries of origin. If all people living in poverty anywhere entered the United States, our immigration laws would lose their meaning and our country would go bankrupt.

The people who march here would be better served if they asked to come to the United States legally. If they try to come illegally, they should not be allowed to enter.

Escaping poverty is a natural desire, but it is not an excuse to take advantage of the generosity of the United States or to extend our laws to the point of rupture.

Refugees are people who flee their homes due to war, persecution or violence. They must legally visit a border entry point or a US consulate and apply for refugee status.

Immigrants are people who want to move to another country to improve their lives and go through a long process of research.

People who cross the border illegally, regardless of their origin, are illegal aliens.

Many Democrats see all the people in the caravan as refugees, with the right to taxpayer-funded care. These Democrats feel uncomfortable sending any foreign Returning to the United States to their countries of origin, because too many Democrats have stopped making a moral distinction between legal and illegal immigration.

These Democrats argue that if someone from other countries wants to enter the United States, allow them. If a foreigner seeks to escape poverty, call them refugees and let them enter.

But for those who seek to escape poverty by entering the United States illegally, who will pay for their medical care once they are here? Who will pay for your home? Their food? Where should they live?

Should the 7,000 people in the caravan be sent to a sanctuary city like San Francisco, where the federal government can tell the leaders that it is up to them to meet the needs of all?

Allowing all immigrants to call themselves refugees is like allowing all Americans to call themselves veterans of our armed forces, entitled to the benefits and privileges earned by veterans. Most Americans are not veterans and most immigrants are not refugees.

It is taking advantage of our generosity as Americans. Our capture and release procedures have turned our laws into a game of etiquette. When people touch the base in the United States, they are safe and usually are not caught. That is the practical reason why many come here illegally. Their family and friends have told them that they can get away with it.

Immigration should not be a game. It is a declaration of who we are as a country and how we define citizenship based on the rule of law.

I still support a comprehensive modernization of our immigration laws. The Democrats should give President Trump a wall wherever our Border Patrol says one is needed. President Trump must allow long-term illegal immigrants who have not violated any additional law to remain here, free from deportation.

As the son of an immigrant who came here legally, I know that legal immigration enriches us. Illegal immigration does not do it.
